Mental Health First Aid for Public Safety

November 28, 2023 @ 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

  • 1 in 4 fatal law enforcement encounters involves an individual experiencing mental illness.
  • Approximately 12 police officers complete suicide month.
  • Approximately 1,000 officers are experiencing PTSD on the job.

Mental Health First Aid for Public Safety teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. This training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care. It focuses on the unique experiences and needs of public safety personnel and is a valuable resource that can make a difference in their lives, their coworkers’ and families’ lives, and the communities they serve.

How Mental Health First Aid for Public Safety Can Help:

  • Improves the way law enforcement interacts with people facing mental health and addiction challenges.
  • Models de-escalation techniques useful when responding to people in crisis safely and effectively.
  • Teaches skills to safely address a comrade’s mental health or substance use challenge.
  • Reduces stigma.
  • Increases mental health and substance use literacy.

POST hours will be available for participants who complete training. John Avery will be facilitator for this training event.
