Nurturing Hope: Building Stronger Futures with Positive Childhood Experiences and Practical Tools
For years, the conversation around child development has centered heavily on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the long shadows they cast over lifelong health. While understanding adversity is crucial, it only tells half the story. Emerging research shows that Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs)—from strong adult relationships to safe, supportive communities—don’t just soften the blow of adversity; they actively build the brain architecture needed for lifelong resilience. Enter the HOPE (Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences) Framework, out of Tufts Medical Center. The HOPE Framework is a transformative model that shifts our focus from “what went wrong” to “what goes right.” By intentionally fostering these key positive experiences, we can fundamentally rewrite a child’s trajectory and equip them to thrive.
Shifting our perspective toward what matters most—positive childhood experiences—empowers communities to actively prioritize the environments and relationships children need to thrive. While these positive experiences benefit every child, recent research highlights an even more profound truth: they carry an exceptionally powerful, transformative impact for individuals who have experienced adversity. This study was a collaboration between The HOPE National Resource Center and with partners at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Johns Hopkins University, Boston University, and Prevent Child Abuse America. Read more from the study, “Positive and Adverse Childhood Experiences and Adult Health and Economic Outcomes” in Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
“This study, instead, examined the relationship between PCEs and adult health and well-being outcomes, while considering the effects of ACEs. This study reflects an important shift in the framing of the discussion of childhood adversity and well-being.” – HOPE Blog on the Study
So, what are these key categories that leave such a profound, lasting impact well into adulthood? The HOPE framework, developed by Tufts Medical Center, identifies them as the Four Building Blocks:
Relationships
Research shows that just one safe, stable, and nurturing relationship can leave a lasting positive impact on a child. These supportive connections are essential for helping children grow into resilient adults. In fact, adults who recall having caring relationships during childhood experience significantly lower rates of depression and poor mental health later in life.

Environment
The environments where we grow up shape our physical and mental health long into adulthood. Every child deserves to live, learn, and play in spaces that are safe, supportive, and equitable. This means creating communities where children see themselves represented in their schools and neighborhoods, and where every family has access to the resources they need to thrive.
Engagement
When children are connected to and active in their communities, they gain a deep sense of confidence and belonging. Participating in community traditions, engaging with local programs, and feeling that their presence truly matters helps children develop into secure, resilient adults who know they are valued.
Emotional Growth
Most of us were never explicitly taught how to self-regulate as children—we had to figure it out along the way. Today, we know that the earlier children learn how to support their nervous systems and seek help when overwhelmed, the stronger their lifelong mental health becomes. Teaching these co-regulation and emotional management skills early lays the essential groundwork for raising emotionally resilient adults.
