Reducing Chronic Absenteeism in Schools

lit

As a part of our four tiered system to improve literacy in Cobb County Schools, attendance is key. Chronic absenteeism has been proven to affect reading levels and overall discipline. An article by Edutopia provides key factors in the school climate that are necessary for reducing chronic absenteeism:

  1. Inspiration
  2. Support
  3. Safety and Health
  4. Respect
  5. Engagement

“Public education is about opening the doors to learning and citizenship for all. Meeting this sacred responsibility is possible when our schools work to have a positive school culture and climate. If we build this, kids will come. And when they can’t, once we help them with family and related hurdles and they do come, they are more likely to stay. ” (Elias, 2019)
